Philippe Starck was born January 18, 1949, in Paris, where he later studied decorative arts at the Ecole Camondo. He set up his first company in 1968 to produce inflatable objects. Beginning with Paris nightclubs in the 1970s, Starck has designed interiors for everything from restaurants in Mexico City and Madrid to hotels in New York and Miami. He has refashioned innumerable objects, including chairs, toothbrushes, sailboats, and motor-bikes, while his architectural projects range from Tokyo office buildings to factories in France. Starck is the winner of numerous awards, and his work has been collected by the Design Museum in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Decorative Arts Museum and Centre Georges Pompidou, both in Paris, and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.
