Preface

This report presents main aspects of my doctoral research conducted at Harvard Graduate School of Design from Fall 2001 to Spring 2004. It was initiated by the aspiration to better understand impacts of globalization on building practice, its worldwide labor markets, and flows of capital. These phenomena have been analyzed for other fields but have so far been widely neglected in building practice as a research subject.

This investigation addressed the need for a diversified analytical framework and a comprehensive description of different impacts of globalization on building practice and its potential subsequent transformation. Such a framework can potentially not only facilitate colaboration and foster mutual understanding among various actors in design and building. It also provides a better understanding of the implications of globalization for the design and building professions and the built environment in general.
