Since the early dasy of his leadership of the architecture program at the Harvard Design School, Jorge Silvetti adopted the habit of formulating and communicating critical ideas in his introductions to speakers in the school's public lecture series. These short statements eventually blossomed into mini-lectures that provided Silvetti with an opportunity to speculate on the state of the art. In this modest but effective medium, he defined his ideological and pedagogical positon, giving a clear indication of where his efforts were takiing the school. It was after hearing Silvetti's introduction to Robert Wilson's lecture that I began to think about this collection. It was a thoughtful analysis that not only gave insight into the work of a leading stage director/designer but also navigated a clear course for the school amid influential currents in art and design. The introduction struck me as an important document that crystallized the culture of the school and gave a snopshot of Silvetti's own intellectual preocupationns at the time. Silvetti never intended for his introductions to be published and often extemporized from simple outlines; thus some of his remarks survive only as fragmentary notes and could not be faithfully recovered for this connection. Yet what remains provides a representative and engaging record of one aspect of Silvetti's significant contribution to architectural discourse Rodolphe el-Khoury Editor, Introductions: Jorge Silvetti Contents: Preface, Rodolphe el-Khoury Jorge Silvetti's Audiences, Preston Scott Cohen Introductions Morris Lapidus Salvatore Settis Francisco Mangado Will Bruder Enric Miralles Rem Koolhaas Richard Meier Renzo Piano Peter Smithson Frank Gehry Toshiko Mori Zaha Hadid Sheila Kennedy Antoine Picon Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio Mathias Klotz Mack Scogin and Merrill Elam Thom Mayne Glenn Murcutt Kenzo Tange Visting Professors Rafael Vinoly Juan Navarro Baldeweg Peter Zumthor Cecil Balmond Eliot Noyes Visiting Professors Alberto Kalach Calvin Tsao James Carpenter The Design Arts Initiative Philippe Starck Robert Wilson Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garcons J Mays The 2002 Walter Gropius Lecture A Note from Jorge Silvetti Acknowledgments: Copyright 2004, President and Fellows of Harvard College |
