Abstract

This booklet is a synopsis of my dissertation, "Participatory Virtual Preservation," which proposes a human-centered approach for architectural preservation using digital media technologies. First, a brief background is presented dealing with geometric representation, sensuous systems, preservation theories and state-of-the-art digital media technologies. Once a background has been established, the thesis moves to a proposal for a virtual architectural preservation approach that makes use of augmented reality applications. Afterward, a case study is analyzed and its implications with regard to customary preservation practices discussed.

The Thesis addresses two main issues: first, it deals with the authorative nature of customary preservation practices; and, second, it offers a context-based and customized interface for an interactive approach for virtual preservation, the study aims to formalize and define guidelines for future preservation procedures. The final end product is an organized model for optimizing the use of digital media tools in architectural preservation.
